Chapter Seventeen
Today...
Shivering and struggling to sniff back tears, Kerry slowly began to sit up. Until just a moment earlier she'd been screaming and desperately trying to fight back, but Maddy Park had been far too strong and had carried her all the way back up the stairs, then up another flight that led into the attic. Finally she'd thrown Kerry to the floor, before storming out and slamming the door shut.
Now the attic was silent, and the only illumination came from a patch of moonlight that was shining through a small window at the far end.
Getting to her feet, Kerry ran to the door and tried to pull it open, only to find that it was locked from the outside.
âEmma?â she called out, hoping desperately that her big sister might be able to hear her. âEmma, I'm scared! I'm in the attic, you have to get me out of here!â
She pulled on the door again and again, before taking a step back as she realized that she was going to have to find some other way out of the attic. The air smelled stale and a little fusty, and as she looked around she saw nothing that might help her break the door down. She tried to work out what Emma would do in the same situation, but after a moment she felt fresh tears in her eyes as she realized that Emma was downstairs with that crazy woman, and that her ankle was badly hurt.
âIt's all my fault,â Kerry whispered as tears started running down her cheeks.
Earlier that night, when she'd first seen Maddy Park, she'd immediately turned and run away. She hadn't even thought about it; filled with fear, she'd raced in the opposite direction, desperate to get away from the woman. In all the confusion, she'd lost track of both Emma and Charley but she thought she'd spotted them running into the cottage. Again, instinct had kicked in; she'd run into the cottage, convinced that her sister must have some kind of plan. Only when she was inside, and saw that there was no-one else around, did she realize that she'd made a terrible mistake. She'd tried to run back out, but she'd heard the old woman approaching so she'd ducked into the nearest room and hidden under a desk. A short while later, she'd ventured out again, only to get scared and sneak upstairs. After planning to run out again, she'd been hugely relieved when her sister and Charley had shown up.
Now she was trapped again, and she couldn't help but think that she probably should have listened to Emma and run for help. She'd almost done just that, only to get scared at the thought of going out alone into the darkness.
Heading over to the window, she stood on tiptoes and peered outside. She couldn't see much at all, but she still tried to get the window open, only to find that it was locked shut. Realizing that climbing out was never going to work, she took a couple of steps back before bumping against something on the floor with her right foot.
